Our Choir

Music banner

Our newly-formed choir sang first on Easter Day 2014, and we are looking forward to developing the music in the parish. The choir leads the congregation in their singing of the weekly hymns and saying of prayers and responses. We sing psalms and cover a range of traditional repertoire including mass settings and anthems, providing opportunities for solos and smaller group singing as well. All choir members will learn how to develop their choral singing and sight-singing skills, and increase their knowledge of sacred repertoire. We are looking to develop:

  • A choir that is made up of young people and adults who will sing to the glory of God and assist the church in worship.
  • A choir where all our members (irrespective of their faith or no faith) will serve, work and learn together using their musical gifts for the growth and mission of the St John’s parish.
  • A choir that will provide leadership by assisting with the said and sung prayers, singing and responses, using music to move and inspire those who have come to church.

Choral Scholarships

We are delighted to announce the launch of a new scholarship scheme for young singers (minimum age 14). This is a particularly good opportunity for students who may in future be looking to apply for choral scholarships at university college chapels. For 2014–2015, up to eight scholarships are available by short audition and we are looking for a mix of soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices. The awards will be worth £200 per annum and it is intended that this will be used to offset the cost of music lessons. The award will be paid termly subject to a simple agreement.

Recipients of the Choral Scholarships will join the choir of St John’s; the choir will look to sing anthems and / or choral mass settings at High Mass, normally the first Sunday of every month plus feast days, approximately 20 times over the year. A list of dates will be available; scholars will be expected to sing at the key services during Christmas and Easter including Holy Week.

Rehearsals take place before each service (eg 9:00 am for 10:30 am Eucharist); additional rehearsals will be arranged as and when necessary especially leading up to the major feast days or special occasions when they arise.
